Per Mertesacker: Arsenal must step up this season

Arsenal's victory over Chelsea in the FA Community Shield at Wembley shows the squad are ready to show their title credentials, Gunners defender Per Mertesacker has said.

Arsenal maintained an impressive build-up to the new Premier League campaign with a well-organised 1-0 win against the 2015 champions, secured with a fine first-half strike from midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

While tougher tests await over the next nine months given Chelsea looked somewhat sluggish following their America tour...

Wenger-Mourinho spat, Wembley lessons, Bayern doubts, quiet Benitez

The Community Shield is not a real trophy. The game is a friendly, albeit the kind we call high-profile because it's at Wembley and live on the global airwaves. Yet there are still nuggets to be extracted from Arsenal's win vs. Chelsea on Sunday.

John Terry: Chelsea defeat to Arsenal was horrible but could be wake-up call

Chelsea captain John Terry hopes losing to Arsenal in Sunday's Community Shield can serve as a blessing in disguise for the defending Premier League champions.

Arsenal won 1-0 through a goal from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as Chelsea struggled to assert their usual dominance over their London rivals.

"It hurts," Terry admitted of having to watch Arsenal lift the trophy. "When you see them walk up, no matter if it's a friendly or a Community Shield, it's a trophy at the end of the day.

"It's horrible,...

Olivier Giroud: Arsenal well-armed to challenge Chelsea for Premier League

Arsenal defeated Chelsea via a first half goal from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to secure a consecutive Community Shield title over their bitter London rivals.

Arsenal are "well-armed" for their Premier League challenge after beating Chelsea to win the Community Shield, according to Gunners striker Olivier Giroud.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's first-half goal was enough to give the FA Cup holders a 1-0 victory over the Premier League champions at Wembley on Sunday.

The result was Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's first victory over Jose Mourinho in 14 attempts, but Giroud told reporters it signalled the Gunners' ability to push Chelsea for the title this season.
