Russian man jailed following Euro 2016 attack on England fan

Riot police were summoned to control clashes between Russia and England fans at Euro 2016.

A Russian man who is suspected of seriously injuring an English football fan at Euro 2016 has been imprisoned in Marseille, France.

The 31-year-old man, who has not been identified, has been charged with attempted homicide and grievous bodily harm following an attack that left Andrew Bache with multiple broken bones and brain injuries, according to the BBC.

Bache, 51, was one of 35 people who were assaulted outside the Stade Velodrome prior to the Euro 2016 group-stage game between England and Russia. He had to be placed in an induced coma as a result of his injuries and is still recovering.

The suspect was arrested last month in Munich as he tried to travel to Spain for the Europa League game between Athletic Bilbao and Spartak Moscow. Transferred to French custody earlier this week, he faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.

Supporters of both teams were jailed and more than 20 people were deported in the aftermath of the attacks.
