The Football Association is hoping to attract more ex-England internationals into management through a fast-track scheme for coaching badges.

Paul Scholes has been named by the BBC as one of the players picked by Dan Ashworth, the FA's technical director. Sources told ESPN FC earlier this month that the former Manchester United player is working toward his A Licence at Blackburn Rovers' academy as part of a fast-track scheme.

"St George's Park is very much open to ex-England players," Ashworth told the BBC. "We are keen to get more English coaches either working with our national teams or back into the Premier League or Football League as coaches and managers.

"I have been in regular contact with several current and ex-England internationals about a pilot programme."

Keith Curle, Mike Phelan and Nigel Clough are the only three managers among England's 92 professional clubs to have played for England at full international level, with just 18 caps between them.

Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry were also said to be on the list of players who the FA could look to help by the Evening Standard earlier this month.
