Gareth Southgate confident he's the right man to take over for England

Gareth Southgate said he had no hesitation in accepting the position of England interim manager following the departure of Sam Allardyce.

Before Allardyce was hired, Southgate said he was not ready to manage the senior team despite finding success with the under-21s.

But after the upheaval that lead to Allardyce's sacking, Southgate said he was the best man to take over the team on such short notice.

None whatsoever," Southgate said as faced the media at St George's Park. "None. I think experience gives you a feel of what is right at certain times. My feel was that this was a moment when it was right to step up and put myself forward. I felt best placed to do that. We have got to give the players the best opportunity to succeed in the three qualifiers coming up.

"I understand the workings of an international week, I know all the nuances of what that looks like. I know the challenges of preparing a team in a short period of time and I think that having an understanding of most of the support team and majority of the players put me in the best position to try and get the results everybody wants."

Southgate, who won the Toulon Tourmament with the under-21s this summer, did acknowledge that he has this job as a result of circumstance.

"You have got to assess quickly who is the right person to do this -- and who is going to do it well. I feel that I am in the right position to do that," he said.

"Do I feel that I am the right person at this moment in time to do this particular role? Yes. Absolutely. Anything else moving forward is something that needs to be considered."

Southgate would not be drawn about whether he would like to extend his tenure beyond the current seven weeks, but he did make the point that he will at least be in an informed position to answer the question after his three World Cup qualifiers and a friendly.

"There's been no time to think forward and actually I don't think it's right to think too far forward," he said. "I think it's right to focus on what we've got to do this week, first and foremost, and then for the games coming up. Then everybody has time to breathe, the organisation has time to breathe. Then people will assess the job I've done.

"They'll assess ultimately on results, but also from my point of view, it will be important to assess how we've dealt with every situation we've been put in. And then they can make a decision. I'm in a privileged position that I will then know a lot more about the role and everything that it entails."

Southgate added that he would do everything he could to bring some sort of continuity to the job.

"I'm very conscious that I don't think we can afford to start again," he said. "The starting point for me is what was a fantastic finish to the game in Slovakia. I've got some footage of the lads celebrating and the bench celebrating the goal.

"I think was a small step, a small brick in the wall of belief of what needs to happen. We have to build on that. It can't be the case that we start again. We can't start again after Roy [Hodgson] and start again after Sam. We've got to go forward."
