Fabien Barthez slams Joe Hart: 'His diving technique isn't good'

Former Manchester United star Fabien Barthez has criticised Joe Hart's technique, saying that his issues are indicative of a deeper problem with English keepers.

Hart, 29, made two major gaffes at Euro 2016 -- the second of which, the error that allowed Kolbeinn Sigthorsson's shot to squeeze past him in the Three Lions' shock 2-1 loss to Iceland, being the goal that sent England out of the tournament.

The mistakes have put the keeper's starting position for both club and country in doubt, and Barthez says that Hart sits well below the world-class category of some his European Championship contemporaries.

"His diving technique isn't good. It's too horizontal and not aggressive enough," Barthez told France Football.

"He isn't flexible and doesn't come out. When he runs, it's just 'thud, thud, thud.'

"He messes up because he doesn't attack the ball's path, meaning his hands are then pushed back by the impact with the ball. Hart is two levels below [Manuel] Neuer, [Thibaut] Courtois and [Hugo] Lloris."

The problem, according to Barthez, is not limited to just Hart. The World Cup winner says that English football continues to produce goalkeepers who aren't mobile enough.

"It's heavy. I don't understand the English culture around the position. They need huge guys, but they're just walls that don't come out.

"Clubs and the FA need to change their philosophy in developing goalkeepers."
