'Embarrassing' England need Gareth Southgate and Glenn Hoddle - Shearer

Alan Shearer has called for a double act of Gareth Southgate and Glenn Hoddle to lead England in the wake of their "clueless and embarrassing" Euro 2016 exit.

Roy Hodgson stepped down as England manager after elimination at the second round stage thanks to the 2-1 defeat to Iceland in Nice.

And the Football Association will aim to appoint Hodgson's successor quickly, with current under-21 manager Southgate being mentioned among the potential candidates.

Former England striker Shearer, who also said he would be interested in the role, believes that Southgate would be a good option and that Hoddle -- who managed England at the 1998 World Cup -- should also return to the fray.

"He [Southgate] fits their remit; he has been with the U21s and he has been around the squad, so I would back Gareth Southgate if he was to go in there," Shearer told BBC Sport. "But I would also look at getting experience around him like Hoddle.

"Glenn was brilliant as a coach for England in my opinion, he has got so much to offer and is still young enough so I would totally back Gareth and Glenn."

"Let's be honest, I haven't got a cat in hell's chance of getting it because I don't fit the FA's remit. I haven't got the experience, which I don't believe is right, I haven't got the coaching badges, which I don't believe is right and that is my honest opinion.

"I spoke to the FA a few years ago and got my answer, but if they want to speak to me then of course I would."

England struggled to break Iceland down after going 2-1 down on 18 minutes, and Shearer was scathing in his criticism of the performance.

"It was pretty pathetic in my opinion," Shearer said. "There was a lot of hype coming into the tournament about our young, energetic youngsters, our players aren't as good as we think they are.

"It was awful to watch, we were clueless. We were out-fought, out-battled, their tactics were better than ours and everywhere you looked on the pitch it was pretty embarrassing."

And Hodgson's team selection throughout the tournament also came under attack from Shearer.

"It looked to me as if Roy was making it up as he was going along," the pundit said. "He didn't have a system, he didn't know his best players, and we were tactically inept.

"How on earth can he pick Jack Wilshere? He hasn't played 90 minutes for over a year. How on earth can he be deemed fit enough or good enough to represent England?

"Raheem Sterling, he's put his neck on the line for him and he hasn't performed, hasn't been playing for his team.

"Our players caved tonight and I thought the manager caved as well."
