England captain Wayne Rooney savouring life in new midfield role

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney has said that he is enjoying a "new chapter" in his career, as he settles into a midfield role for club and country.

England captain Rooney had been playing as a lone striker for United until he suffered a knee injury in mid-February, which opened the door for Marcus Rashford to make his debut for the club. Since returning from injury on April 13, Rooney has played in a deeper role for United and has gone on to do the same for England at the European Championship.

Speaking at a news conference to preview England's round of 16 game against Iceland on Monday, Rooney said: "I'm enjoying my football. It's a new chapter, a new position and I'm hoping it's the start of a very good chapter."

The 30-year-old was rested against Slovakia and brought on in the 56th minute, as England were held to a 0-0 draw on June 20. That result cost England the chance to win Group B and they qualified in second position.

Rooney believes that England need to be more ruthless, saying: "If you look at the last game, if you don't take chances, it can cost you a result. Going into the knockout stages, we need to make sure we take full advantage of them."

At club level, Rooney is settled, having said on June 19 that he is interested in extending his deal with United beyond the three seasons he has left on his contract.
