Gareth Southgate warns England U21s to be wary of a Swiss backlash

England under-21s boss Gareth Southgate insists they can take a massive step towards the U21 European Championship with victory in Switzerland.

The Young Lions go to Thun on Saturday as leaders of Group Nine and on course to reach the finals in Poland next year.

They are three points clear at the halfway stage of qualification and know that victory would move them six points ahead of their hosts, who are joint second with Norway.

England beat Switzerland 3-1 in Brighton in November, with all three goals coming in the final eight minutes, and Southgate knows his side must be prepared for a backlash.

"No two games are the same and they were obviously disappointed to lose the game, but we have to be ready for a high-quality test," Southgate said. "It'll be a severe challenge and probably the toughest in the group. The reward for winning out there is huge for us.

"We are focused on understanding the threat they pose, but also knowing we have some good players and we want to go and play in the style we always do.

"We know the areas we can improve in and it's part of the evolution of the team."

Hull's Arsenal loanee Isaac Hayden has withdrawn through injury, while injured pair Nathan Redmond and Duncan Watmore are also unavailable to boss Southgate.

However, Leicester's Demarai Gray and Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe are included.

"It's a nice moment for Demarai, we watched him a lot at Birmingham and he has an extremely good mentality. The few opportunities he's had with Leicester he has done very well and working with a coach like Claudio [Ranieri] will only help his game."

Sacked Derby boss Paul Clement has this week joined the U21 coaching team, which includes Chelsea assistant Steve Holland, and Southgate believes building relationships is vital.

"I have two Champions League-winning coaches so I can just sit back and let them get on with it.

"It's nice to reach out to managers and coaches and Chris Powell was watching training on Thursday as well."
