Wayne Rooney ties Lineker for 2nd in England's all-time goalscoring list

England captain Wayne Rooney has moved joint-second in the all-time scoring list for his country, one behind Sir Bobby Charlton's long-standing record.

Ahead of the friendly game with Ireland, Rooney had scored his 47th England goal in the 4-0 victory over Lithuania back in March and he wasted little time in catching Gary Lineker's 48 goals as he netted the winner in England's thrilling 3-2 Euro 2016 qualifier victory against Slovenia.

Charlton's record of 49 goals for England has stood for over four decades since the Manchester United legend played his final international in 1970, with Lineker previously the closest to matching the milestone as he came up just one short of the tally during his international career.

Rooney, though, has spent the last few months adding to his tally and admitted that he was keen to break the record.

"You're in this game for your teammates," he said back in October. "There's nothing better than getting a trophy, but it would be great to get the record.

"I'd never have thought that when I came into this England team that I would be best goal scorer. It would be massive for me and make my family proud. I want to do it. I've seen clips of Jimmy Greaves and Bobby, of course. It is there. It's there for me to overtake them all and I feel I'm capable of doing that."
