Harry Kane retains England under-21 place, Eric Dier among those omitted

Harry Kane has kept his place in England's squad for the European Under-21 Championship, while Tottenham teammate Eric Dier is one of four players to be omitted.

Gareth Southgate had to trim his 27-man preliminary squad to 23 on Tuesday to meet the UEFA deadline for this month's tournament in the Czech Republic.

Kane, who scored 31 goals for Tottenham this season and 79 seconds into an England senior debut against Lithuania in March, is one of the players who will be linking up with Southgate next week.

Despite being promoted to the senior squad earlier this campaign, the striker has always said he wanted to play in the European Under-21 Championship, which takes place between June 17-30.

Dier is the highest-profile omission with Wolves striker Benik Afobe, Chelsea forward Patrick Bamford and Cauley Woodrow of Fulham also left out from the original squad.

Kane, West Brom's Saido Berahino and Burnley's Danny Ings are all included in a squad which will see England play against Portugal, Sweden and Italy in the group stages.

Southgate suggested Dier has missed out because the 21-year-old is young enough to take part for the under-21s again next season.

"Eric was a difficult one,'' Southgate told the Football Association's official website. "That's because we've got five very good centre-backs in that initial squad.

"Eric was last involved in the playoff game in Croatia and part of my thinking was that out of those five, Eric can be part of the U21s squad again next season.

"For the others, it's their last opportunity so I'm very much looking at Eric as being one of our leaders next campaign and really taking ownership of the position on the field.''

Bamford, who scored 19 goals this season on loan at Middlesbrough, misses out following an ankle injury but Southgate said the competition was fierce.

He also said he had been impressed with former Arsenal striker Afobe, who was on target 32 times this season for MK Dons and Wolves.

"It's been hard, but a couple of the guys always knew that they were already stand-by players,'' Southgate said.

"It's a shame for Patrick, because he's been injured and that's why he misses out. We were conscious that towards the end of the season he wasn't really fit to train with Middlesbrough, so he needs that period to get himself fit right now.

"We felt we wanted to acknowledge the season that he [Afobe] has had and it's the same with Callum Wilson, who also wasn't fit for the original squad.

"Benik had been in the England system at younger age groups and had a really good season last year and if we had any problems then I wouldn't hesitate to call him in. He's been really enthusiastic about potential involvement and I've been very impressed.

"But it's always a difficult conversation to have because you'd like to give everybody the opportunity, but you're not able to do that.''

The majority of Southgate's squad have reported to the FA's national football centre at St George's Park already, with those who have been involved for their clubs more recently joining a second training camp next week.

Southgate has named three goalkeepers -- Marcus Bettinelli, Jonathan Bond and Jack Butland -- and can call on plenty of Premier League experience, with the likes of Everton's John Stones and Carl Jenkinson, who had a fine season at West Ham on loan from Arsenal, at the back.

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse, Tottenham's Tom Carroll and rising Chelsea talent Ruben Loftus-Cheek are among the midfielders.

"This first week is about getting the players back into training and we've given them all a period off after the end of their season,'' Southgate said.

"We chose not to go abroad for our prep and I thought that was an important message really, so we gave the players some time last week and this week to take their own holidays.

"They'll have little breaks between our camps, but we wanted to use St. George's Park because it is home for us and there's a good atmosphere in the group when we're here. And everything is here for us, so when we work and we're training it's great to be able to use it.''

England play Belarus at Barnsley's Oakwell ground on June 11 before their European Championship campaign starts against Portugal in Uherske Hradiste on June 18.
