England captain Wayne Rooney said his side had the chances to secure victory against Italy after a spirited second-half performance earned them a 1-1 draw in Turin.

A stunning strike from Andros Townsend cancelled out Graziano Pelle's opener and ensured England extended their unbeaten record to eight games following their World Cup disappointment last summer.

Rooney, however, believes the Three Lions could and perhaps should have left Juventus Stadium with a more impressive result.

"I think we deserved to win it in the end," Rooney told ITV. "We had the better chances. Italy were the better team in the first half, partly because of ourselves -- because we didn't put enough pressure on the ball and we let them have it too easily.

"Second half we came out and dominated. We created chances and could have won the game. Italy away, so it's not a disastrous result and it keeps us on an unbeaten run since last summer, so we have to be happy after that first-half performance.

"It was important to keep the unbeaten run going. We know this is a friendly game and we are missing a lot of players, but it was a good chance for the players that came in to give the manager something to think about.

"The first half was not what we had planned and we had to react second half and we have done that, and we could have won the game. We have to see this in a positive way as it was a good result in the end."

The introduction of Townsend and Ross Barkley from the bench appeared to give England the spark they were lacking in the first half, but Rooney felt one of his Manchester United teammates was the catalyst for an improved performance after the break.

"The best player on the pitch by a mile was Michael Carrick," Rooney said. "When he came on, he dictated the game for us and you could see how much control we had from that point. He was the difference between the two teams in the second half.

"Andros and Ross are impact players and they can create chances for you and that is what we are hoping they could do. Thankfully Andros has done that with a great goal."

Townsend was delighted to make his mark in an England shirt once again as he notched his third goal in just his seventh appearance for his country.

"It was a difficult game and it was hard to break them down," Townsend said. "They set up very well and it had to be a strike from 25 to 30 yards to get a goal today, and thankfully it was me that got it.

"After we got the equaliser, we had two or three chances to get the winner, but it wasn't to be. It is a good result against Italy on their home patch.

"The manager stuck by me through the tough times and every time he has picked me, I think I have repaid the faith. Thankfully I have come on and did it again."

Townsend took to Twitter after the game to respond to former England international Paul Merson, who had said the Tottenham man should not have been included in Roy Hodgson's squad for the Lithuania and Italy matches.
