Danny Welbeck out of England-Italy friendly, Sterling excused - Hodgson

England manager Roy Hodgson confirmed that Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck will miss Tuesday's international friendly against Italy, while Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling will also be excused from the game in Turin.

Hodgson revealed that Sterling delayed treatment on an existing injury to play in England's 4-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Lithuania on Friday, in which he scored.

Sterling also created the chance that allowed Harry Kane to grab his first international goal just 80 seconds into his debut.

There has been some controversy in recent days over the suggestion that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had done a deal with Hodgson to get his players released from the game against Italy, but it appears that Sterling's injury problem is genuine as he needs time to recover from a toe problem.

Meanwhile, Welbeck picked up an injury in the Lithuania game that will not only be a concern to England, as Arsenal will hope their forward is not ruled out of next weekend's vital Premier League match against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium.

Welbeck was in fine form for the Three Lions as he scored England's second goal on Friday evening.

"We have had two blows because I have always known that Raheem Sterling was waiting for an injection in his toe and he has been playing through an injury for a while now," Hodgson told ITV Sport.

"Raheem has done well to play through it, but I have known for a while that he needed this injection and I agreed with he and Brendan [Rodgers] that he would play tonight's game and then he would have the injection.

"We are going to lose both him and Welbeck, which is a blow for us because they are an important part of a system we are trying to play. It will give a chance to somebody else."

Hodgson refused to confirm whether Kane would get his first England start in Turin after his goal-scoring debut against Lithuania, but he has released Leighton Baines and James Milner from the squad for Tuesday's friendly in Turin.

Manchester City's Milner is carrying a knee problem and Baines will also return to his club Everton, while the England manager also confirmed uncapped Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand will joining up with the squad on Saturday.
