Carrick, Welbeck out of England squad

Manchester United duo Michael Carrick and Danny Welbeck have pulled out of the England squad because of injury.

Danny Welbeck will miss England's games against Chile and Germany.

England manager Roy Hodgson named a 28-man squad for the friendlies against Chile and Germany at Wembley, with no replacements expected to be called up.

Carrick, who played the full 90 minutes of United's 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday, reportedly left Old Trafford showing signs of an Achilles injury.

"I have been carrying the injury for a few weeks now," he said. "I was a bit patched up to play. I got through it but it doesn't look too good."

Welbeck, meanwhile, has not played since Oct. 19 due to a knee injury.

Liverpool pair Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge remain doubts for the double-header, with Brendan Rodgers telling the Guardian: "It is something they are going to have a look at. Daniel hurt his foot and I just have to see how he is with the medical guys. Steven was a wee bit stiff around his hip. Again, he needs to be assessed."

Frank Lampard earned his 100th England cap in the goalless World Cup qualifying draw against Ukraine and is expected to be named as captain for the game against Chile on Friday, when he will be honoured for his achievement prematch.
