Fearn oversees Dover success

Referee Amy Fearn wrote herself into the FA Cup history books on Saturday as Dover progressed to the second round with a hard-earned 2-1 win at Corby.

Goals from Nathan Elder and Chris Kinnear early in the second half were enough to seal a nervy victory for the Conference South side at Steel Park as Chris Carruthers netted a late reply for the hosts.

But the game will be remembered for the confident display of Fearn, who became the first female to referee a game in the competition's 142-year history.

Tommy Wright should have put Corby in front after 13 minutes when he fluffed a free header.

The home side then missed a number of good chances with Tom McGowan and Stuart Hendrie both going close, with former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie pulling the strings.

Dover came out with hunger after half-time and quickly hit the front as Elder rose well to head home Tom Murphy's cross after 57 minutes.

Kinnear then put the tie beyond doubt as he glanced home Barry Cogan's delivery from out wide.

The match was blighted when a Dover fan suffered a head injury after fighting broke out between both sets of fans moments after the decisive second goal, before Carruthers hit a consolation two minutes into added time for Corby.
