Karagandy suffer late heartache

Shakhter Karagandy were the victims of late drama in European competition again as PAOK Salonika scored an injury-time winner to win 2-1 in their Europa League Group L clash.

The Kazaks were good bets to make the Champions League proper until Celtic fought back to beat them last month, and they were given a similar medicine.

They had led through George Canas' penalty but were pegged back by Stefanos Athanasiadis and then conceded a last-gasp winner to Zvonimir Vukic.

PAOK made the early running and twice forced Alexandr Mokin into action, with Costin Lazar the perpetrator on both occasions.

Lucas then worked Mokin and the Kazakh international was even more impressive as he tipped a Stelios Kitsiou effort over.

The pressure was relentless and Lucas twice hit over before Shakhter missed the chance to relieve some of it when Gediminas Vicius headed over after Sanz Jacobo had saved from Aldin Dzidic.

Those chances before the break were a precursor to what followed it, though, as Shakhter took a 49th-minute lead. Konstantinos Katsouranis hauled down Canas in the box and the victim got up from the floor to tuck away the opener.

The same man then cracked the bar as the visitors dominated and, although Salpingidis worked Mokin by way of a response, it should have 2-0 to the visitors as both Gevorg Ghazaryan and Sergey Khizhnichenko passed up scoring chances.

But PAOK got the goal their earlier industry had deserved with 15 minutes left as Stefanos Athanasiadis ghosted in to convert Lucas' cross.

The game was on a knife edge and Khizhnichenko drove over but when Andrey Poryvaev saw red with four minutes left, the game was perhaps up for Shakhter.

Salonika took up the baton after that and Mokin pushed away a Miroslav Stoch header, with the subsequent corner nodded wide by Salpingidis.

Their late onslaught bore fruit too as Dorvalino Lino crossed for Vukic who headed in.
