Sheriff Tiraspol 0-0 Anzhi Makhachkala

FC Sheriff and Anzhi Makhachkala contested an open but uninspiring Europa League stalemate to get their Group K campaigns under way.

The Russian side showed the effects of their rapid restructuring this summer in a moderate display, though they would have been worthier winners than their Moldovan hosts.

There was no shortage of shots on goal, though little by way of match-winning quality.

The visitors had the first effort in the sixth minute, Nikita Burmistrov providing Vjekoslav Tomic with a simple save with a gentle 25-yarder.

Tomic was called on again soon after, collecting Odil Ahmedov's free-kick after Miral Samardzic's indiscretion.

The game was lacking much cohesion, but Anzhi were having the better of it and it took Sheriff 24 minutes to muster a shot worthy of the name.

Cadu was the man to provide, but even then it was little more than a speculative attempt.

Anzhi's next effort - a misdirected header from Islamnur Abdulavov - was a likelier chance but equally unsuccessful.

Gia Grigalava should have put the Russians ahead on the half-hour but turned Burmistrov's corner wide from inside the six-yard box.

Either side of half-time the game descended into a series of ambitious shots from distance but with half an hour left Sheriff might have nicked it, Juan Andreu Melli heading wide from Cadu's inswinging corner.

Anzhi would have won the game had Burmistrov had his shooting boots on, spurning three decent chances in a 10-minute period.

Ismail Isa should have stolen the points a minute from time but Mihail Kerzhakov reacted superbly to preserve his clean sheet.
