Gavin Swankie's close-range effort earned Forfar a 3-2 home win over Dunfermline in the opening round of the Ramsdens Cup.
Swankie, signed this summer from rivals Arbroath, struck in the 66th minute with a left-footed shot.
Earlier, two goals in three minutes had brought the tie to life.
Omar Kader fired Forfar ahead after 13 minutes, neatly converting a cross from Danny Denholm. But Dunfermline were back level just two minutes later when Ryan Wallace produced a right-footed finish from 12 yards.
Dunfermline then took the lead after 35 minutes with a goal from forward Andrew Barrowman, who shot low into the net from 12 yards.
Forfar made it 2-2 in the 53rd minute, Denholm driving home left-footed from 12 yards, before Swankie pounced for the winner.
