Senegal 1-1 UAE: Africans through

Senegal joined Great Britain's men in the quarter-finals of the Olympic football tournament after leading marksman Moussa Konate rescued a point against UAE at the City of Coventry Stadium.

Konate scored his fourth goal in three Group A matches early in the second half to cancel out Matar Ismaeil's opener.

It meant that Senegal finished in second spot on five points - behind GB - and they will face Mexico in the last eight.

Senegal came close to taking the lead when Konate headed wide when unmarked at the far post from a Pape Souare free-kick.

Then Konate was inches away from connecting with a low ball across the six yard box from the overlapping Souare.

But after 21 minutes UAE went ahead in their first meaningful attack when skipper Ismaeil flicked home a low cross from Eisa Rashed.

Senegal retaliated with Everton's Magaye Gueye and Zargo Toure having goal-bound shots blocked.

They needed only four minutes of the second half to get back on level terms when Konate headed in from another testing centre from Souare.

Konate had the chance to put Senegal in front but his shot was blocked by the legs of Eisa Khalid.

Then substitute Ibrahima Balde headed wide when unmarked but UAE held on to claim their first point of the tournament.
