Moldova sink San Marino

Moldova rounded off their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a routine victory over San Marino in a contest between Group E's bottom two teams in Chisinau.

Denis Zmeu set the ball rolling for Moldova with the opener on the half-hour mark - the 50th goal San Marino had conceded in their Group E matches. A 62nd-minute own goal from Simone Bacciocchi doubled the Moldovans' advantage and Alexandr Suvorov put the result beyond doubt five minutes later.

Moldova substitute Igor Tigirlas was dismissed for foul and abusive language in the 84th minute - just six minutes after his introduction - but there was still time for fellow substitute Gheorghe Andronic to make a more positive impact with a fourth goal three minutes from time.

The hosts had the better of the first-half possession but the San Marino defence stood firm for the first quarter.

Zmeu and Suvorov were off target while Anatolie Doros saw an early effort comfortably saved by San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini.

Suvorov, Doros and Eugeniu Cebotaru all then had further shots parried by Simoncini as Moldova continued to press.

The breakthrough arrived in the 30th minute when Zmeu fired into the bottom-right corner from Victor Golovatenco's left-wing cross.

Simoncini remained much the busier of the two keepers but there were no further goals before the break.

Doros again tested Simoncini 10 minutes after the restart, the stopper in the right place to keep out his 12-yard attempt and then another blast from the edge of the box from Anatolie Cheptene a minute later.

San Marino were offering nothing at the other end, though, and the second goal Moldova more than merited arrived in the 62nd minute when Bacciocchi headed into his own net.

Suvorov soon made it 3-0 with a neat low finish after latching onto Igor Bugaev's pass from the right.

Simoncini produced a fine save to tip over Zmeu's fierce 25-yard free-kick midway through the second half as the visitors sought to keep the score respectable.

Moldova suffered a setback in the 84th minute when Tigirlas was shown a straight red card, but the 10 men had the final say as Andronic prodded home a fourth goal from Bugaev's assist to seal a straightforward victory.
