Hamburg SV 2-2 Mainz

HAMBURG, April 22 (Bundesliga) - Hamburg failed to pull away from the relegation fight in the Bundesliga on Sunday, gaining just a 2-2 draw at home against Mainz, who themselves stay in the bottom three.

Mohamed Zidan continued his fine form with the opening goal in the 12th minute for Mainz, only for Juan Pablo Sorin to equalise for the hosts in the 23rd minute with a penalty.

Mainz regained the lead in the 59th minute through Fabian Gerber but then saw Jose Paolo Guerrero even things up again in the 83rd minute.

Huub Stevens' team could have given themselves some breathing room above the drop zone after just one loss in their last nine games.

But Hamburg could not take advantage of the home crowd, moving onto 36 points - just three points from the relegation zone.

Mainz started the second half as the best team in the league, going six games without a loss.

But a four-game losing streak followed until Sunday, as Jurgen Klopp's side finally gained a point to move to 31 - good only for 17th in the league.

The guests got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 12th minute.

Zidan ran onto a long ball, stopped, danced around Joris Mathijsen on the left wing before beating Hamburg keeper Frank Rost with a shot into the far-right upper corner from 11 yards out.

It was the Egypt international's 12th goal of the season - and his 11th in the last 10 games.

Hamburg equalised just 11 minutes later with a penalty by Sorin, which came about after Milorad Pekovic brought down Hamburg's David Jarolim in the area.

Christian Wetklo guessed the correct way on Sorin's penalty, but the Argentinian's left-footer was hard enough to get by the Mainz keeper.

Mainz regained the lead in the 59th minute with a counter-attack.

Zidan was fed a long ball and slotted it through to a rushing Leon Andreasen, who barely got a toe on the ball to deflect it into the path of Gerber. His shot then bounced off Rost's leg and rolled off the left post into the goal.

Mainz worked hard defensively but Hamburg equalised again with seven minutes left.

Mathias Abel headed against the left post and the ball rebounded back in play for substitute Guerrero to pounce.
