Atletico Madrid v Real Betis: Preview

Atletico Madrid defender Juanfran Torres hopes his side's match with Real Betis on Sunday will mark the start of another winning run that will help them maintain the pace with title rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone's side's eight-game winning streak came to an end last week with a 1-0 defeat at Espanyol, and they slipped one point behind Barcelona at the top of the Primera Division.

Atleti responded in the right manner to their defeat by making light work of Austria Vienna in the Champions League in midweek, romping to a 3-0 away win.

Now Juanfran hopes his team can put things right domestically.

``We want to win and put together another magnificent run of victories,'' he told reporters. ``And it all starts with beating Betis. I hope we can stay near the top of the league for a long time and be leaders for as long as possible.

``The defeat against Espanyol has been forgotten and we won again in the Champions League and gave a very good showing of ourselves.''

Atletico forward Diego Costa scored twice in Vienna to take his tally for the season to 12 goals in all competitions.

The Brazilian was named the Liga BBVA player of the month for September, but highlighted the role of his coach in getting the best out of him and his team.

``Simeone has transmitted the winning mentality that he has inside himself to us, that desire to win every single game,'' Costa told the league's official website.

``He has instilled in us the energy we needed.''

Betis are on a poor run of form in the league, losing 2-1 at home to Elche last weekend and go into the game just one spot above the relegation zone, but, like Atletico, saw a change of fortunes in Europe, beating Portuguese side Guimares 1-0 in their Europa League fixture.

Atletico have just two injury concerns ahead of the match: Leo Baptistao is ruled out as he recovers from a sprained ankle, while left-back Filipe Luis is doubtful with a muscle strain.

Betis' injuy problems are far worse.

Midfielders Joan Verdu and Nosa Igiebor are doubts, as are defenders Paulao and Damian Perquis.

Centre-back Antonia Amaya misses the game due to suspension, while Xavi Torres and Ruben Castro are out with injuries.
