Voeller: We want to win

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voeller is adamant his side will be fully focused for their dead rubber Europa League tie against Metalist Kharkiv on Thursday.

Both clubs have already booked their place in the knockout stage, while Bayer have taken an understrength squad to Ukraine.

Key names Lars Bender, Andre Schurrle, Gonzalo Castro, Omer Toprak and Hajime Hosogai have stayed at home, while captain Simon Rolfes is a major doubt as he awaits the birth of his second child.

Despite their absences Voeller, who joined the group on the plane on Wednesday, wants Bayer to secure a win to keep them at the top of Group K.

``We are already qualified but we would like to go across the finish line as the group winners,'' he told reporters.

``We want to defend our position at the top of the table in Kharkiv and get at least a draw.

``We will try that by all means but we will have to save a few players for the match due to our very difficult programme ahead of us.''

Speaking about the possibility of Rolfes joining up with the team late, Voeller added: ``If the baby comes today or overnight then Simon may join on Thursday.''

Leverkusen are in excellent form ahead of the match, having won seven of their past eight and are level on points at the top of the group with Metalist.

The Ukrainians will be looking to score their first goal in four meetings against Bayer, but the Germans are yet to concede in the group stage this season.
