VfL Wolfsburg v VfB Stuttgart: Preview

Dieter Hecking will be the third new face on the Wolfsburg bench this season when he takes his seat for the Bundesliga restart against Stuttgart tomorrow.

Hecking arrived in the winter break to replace Lorenz-Gunther Kostner, who had been in charge on an interim basis following Felix Magath's resignation in October.

Kostner managed to lift the side from the foot of the table, but Hecking's arrival is intended to take the next step in leading the club back into contention for a place in Europe.

``We want to start the second half of the season with a win,'' said Hecking.

``If we use the quality which we have seen in just a short time together, then I think we'll play a good game tomorrow.

``We need to be convinced in our means and the way we play football, and then we can beat Stuttgart.''

Hecking says he has not found a team with low spirits, but he knows that ``the proof in the pudding comes tomorrow''.

``I think we have worked very well, but one thing's for sure - we don't get anything for the good results in our preparation,'' he added.

``Competitive games are what count.''

Stuttgart coach Bruno Labbadia has been watching the Wolves during the mid-season break and he hopes they are not as strong tomorrow as they have been over the past few weeks in Turkey.

``They looked very organised,'' said Labbadia at a press conference. ``The question is how quickly Dieter is able to form a good team.

``But we have a good training camp behind us and we are looking forward to the second half of the season.

``Our aim is to settle somewhere between fifth and 10th, and the higher the better.''

Labbadia is without the suspended Vedad Ibisevic and Gotoku Sakai.
