Toulouse v Paris Saint-Germain : Preview

David Beckham has ruled himself out of contention to make an immediate debut for Paris St Germain at Toulouse tomorrow.

The former England captain signed up until the end of the season today but said it would take around a fortnight for him to be match-ready, having not played since helping the LA Galaxy win the MLS Cup at the start of December.

That means the focus will shift from the hubbub caused by Beckham's arrival to the pressing need for PSG to keep winning to protect their position at the top of Ligue 1.

After the huge investment in the club by owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi, PSG were expected to dominate the French league this season but have not had it all their own way. However, wins over Bordeaux and Lille in their last two fixtures have seen them edge ahead of Lyon on goal difference.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti was due to hold a press conference to discuss the trip to Toulouse at lunchtime today, but once word got out that Beckham was on his way that appointment was cancelled.

Ancelotti was notable only by his absence from Beckham's introductory press conference, but would have been heartened that the former Real Madrid and Manchester United midfielder was full of praise for his qualities and eager to work with him again, after they were previously both at AC Milan.

A clean sheet would help PSG's cause tomorrow, and goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu has not conceded in 776 minutes of Ligue 1 football, a club record.

``I don't attach a lot of importance to that fact,'' Sirigu said. ``I think the merit belongs to all the team and our defence. It's the result of all the work done in getting there. I don't go on the pitch thinking about the record, I go on thinking about giving the maximum for the team.''

As for Toulouse, Sirigu said on PSG's website: ``It's an away match and it's always a hot reception there. Toulouse is a team we know well. They can pose us problems because they have good players. They have one of the most spectacular styles of play in the league.

``We'll have to be careful because they can be dangerous in an attacking sense.''

Toulouse, who stand 10th in Ligue 1, might have fielded a player belonging to PSG tomorrow, after teenage midfielder Adrien Rabiot joined them on loan from the capital side today. However he has not been named in their matchday squad.

As Rabiot arrived, Emmanuel Riviere departed, with the forward making a permanent move to Monaco.
