  • Luis Fabiano 42'
  • Andrea Dossena 44' OG
  • 93'

    USA are through.

  • 93'

As for Italy, they've got problems. Cannavaro is past it, their full backs don't add much going forward, their midfield lacks guile, pace and magic, and they don't matchwinners up front. They'll probably inveigle their way to the final in the World Cup anyway.

  • 93'

In the other game, USA are 3 up. Egypt need an injury time goal to progress instead of them.

  • 93'

    FULL TIME: BRAZIL 3-0 ITALY

  • 93'

Dossena hammers a shot high and wide from miles away. That'll be about it.

  • 93'

Brazil break speedily, but Cannavaro blocks Kaka's shot.

  • 92'

De Rossi hoofs it forward, but Rossi can't get the ball down.

  • 91'

    Three minutes of injury time.

  • 90'

Great strong-armed block from Cesar to turn away Pepe's low cross.

  • 90'

Lucio is down, planting his foot awkwardly after a nudge from Rossi.

  • 88'

Pirlo caught by Kaka who apologises ostentatiously.

  • 86'

Kaka shoots from 20 yards after the ball breaks to him, and opening up his body to bend a low shot to Buffon's left, the ball is deflected behind. The corner comes to nothing.

  • 85'

Kaka and Zambrotta enjoy some hilarity, as the former studs the latter in a Milanese show of bonhomie.

  • 84'

De Rossi finds Rossi, and he wacks a shot wide. Kleberson replaces Gilberto, bringing a silly goatee on to the pitch with him. No idea how he's managed to earn himself a recall.

  • 83'

Pirlo's cross is only just too high for Gilardino.

  • 82'

Rossi - who has made a difference - wriggles some space on the left of the area, but is subsequently crowded out.

  • 81'

Dossena has just been booked for fouling Ramires, and celebrated by expelling his nasal passages as violently as possible.

  • 80'

Camoranesi beats Gilberto, but Lucio is there to cover.

  • 78'

De Rossi heads the kick clear.

  • 78'

Miacon's shot is blocked behind by Chiellini.

  • 76'

Oooh. Good chance for Italy. They work it through to Gilardino and Cesar comes out. He doesn't panic, and the ball is worked across to Pepe via De Rossi, but the keeper is now back in his goal and the shot is blocked.

  • 75'

Clint Dempsey has scored for USA, who lead Egypt 3-0. If the scores stay as they are, they go through.

  • 75'

    Rossi can't collect Dossena's ball.

  • 72'

These horns are going on and on. I would happily skin alive those blowing, and turn them into shower curtains.

  • 69'

Kaka's shot from just outside the d is only narrowly wide of Buffon's right-hand post.

  • 68'

USA score again against Egypt. One more puts them through if they don't concede.

  • 68'

Rossi shoots again from range, this time from the right hand side, but again it's too close to Julio Cesar.

  • 67'

Pepe - who has done quite well - plays a one-two with Rossi and launches himself at the return ball, but can't get decent contact.

  • 66'

Dossena crosses low to the front post, Gilardino gets in front of Luisao and stabs it goalwards, but it's nowhere near hard enough to trouble the keeper.

  • 65'

Rossi, 30 yards out and wide on the left, hits a shot straight and hard, and Julio Cesar punches it away well. Although he's not had much to do tonight, he's a very good keeper.

  • 64'

Camoranesi - who has probably been Italy's best player - cuts inside and is robbed.

  • 62'

Camoranesi can't take Pirlo's pass in his stride, but even if he had, Brazil were well-covered at the back.

  • 61'

Brazil stroke the ball around while Italy chase.

  • 60'

Just noticed I've been spelling Ramires's name Ramirez. Apologies to Mr and Mrs Ramires and anyone else I mnight have offended.

  • 59'

Good low cross from Dossena, and Camoranesi makes a good run, but Luisao defends well, doing enough to block the player and ball.

  • 58'

Melo makes an error and Pepe races down the right, but his ball is intercepted. Maicon is down - elbowed by Rossi - and it wasn't necessarily accidental.

  • 57'

Toni is replaced by Gilardino. Oh dear Italy.

  • 57'

Lucio tricks Dossena, who fouls him.

  • 56'

With the contest over, it'd be nice to see Pato.

  • 55'

Dossena cross again, but the ball is headed away.

  • 54'

Pepe breaks well down the right, and his cross is deflected away. Dossena retrieves the ball and puts in a better ball, but its cleared and Brazil break.

  • 53'

Maicon's ball to Fabiano - whose movement is very sharp - is a little too strong.

  • 53'

Marcello Lippi is prowling the touchline, looking a lot cooler than his team.

  • 50'

Lucio easily outruns Rossi, eyeballing him dismissively as he does.

  • 49'

Santos takes a little step and curls his free kick well over the bar.

  • 48'

Melo breaks clear at pace, finds Fabiano, and he steps inside Chiellini, who brings him down in clumsy fashion. Yellow card.

  • 46'

  • 46'

Good play from Robinho, skipping past two challenges. He looks like he's enjoying playing for Brazil a lot more than playing for City. Funny that.

  • 46'

    And we're off again.

  • 45'

Rossi, when he ame on at the end of the first half, replaced Iaquinta.

  • 45'

    Pepe has replaced Montolivo.

  • 45'

Fabiano's second goal was really an excellent finish, lifted over Buffon as he went to ground.

  • 45'

Italy haven't actually played that badly, but they're defending like narcoleptic toddlers. That said, Brazil's passing and movement is very good, as is their combination play going forward.

  • 45'

    HALF TIME: BRAZIL 3 - 0 ITALY.

  • 45'

Rossi, who has just come on, loses the ball, Robinho gets away wide on the left found by Kaka, and his cross is turned into his own net by Dossena, attempting to intercept.

  • 44'

    GOAL! BRAZIL 3 - 0 ITALY

  • 43'

Robinho gets free down the left, finds Kaka outside him, and steps over the return ball crossed into the middle, allowing Fab=iano to score easily.

  • 43'

    GOAL! BRAZIL 2 - ITALY 0

  • 41'

Pirlo whips in a free kick from wide on the left, which is headed clear, and Brazil break. The horns are still going like billy-o. There are truly some morons' morons in this crowd.

  • 39'

Not great defending from Italy - Cannavaro was particularly culpable in reacting slowly.

  • 37'

Maicon comes inside, drags a tame shot from distance which is going wide, but Luis Fabiano pulls it into his path, steps clear of the Italian line on the right hand side of the area, and slips a low shot past Buffon into the bottom right-hand corner.

  • 37'

    GOAL! BRAZIL 1 - 0 ITALY

  • 33'

Robinho gets a touch on the corner, and the ball is cleared behind for another. After the second one is headed clear, the ball is sent wide to Lucio, and his low cross is diverted against the post. The ball comes out and Lucio has another effort which is blocked, he scuffs the rebound inside, and Melo belts it wide.

  • 32'

Maicon runs at Dossena without looking up, and it's easy for the defender to stop him, albeit at the concession of a corner.

  • 31'

Brazil break down the left, switch it right via Kaka in centrefield, and when the ball finds Maicon, Fabiano heads his cross past Buffon's right hand post.

  • 29'

Quick feet from Pirlo, beating three men in the middle of the pitch, but when he spreads it left, Dossena is unable to capitalise.

  • 28'

Italy attack well down the left and when Brazil don't clear a cross, Camoranesi hits the ball hard, but it's straight at Julio Cesar.

  • 27'

Melo curls the ball wide to Santos with the outside of his right foot, and the ball eventually finds its way inside to Kaka, who drags a shot wide from distance.

  • 25'

Nonsense defending, first by Zambrotta and then by Chiellini, but Italy escape when Ramirez is unable to take advantage.

  • 24'

Juan's hamstring problem has flared up - probably in a tackle with Iaquinta - and he's been replaced by Luisao.

  • 23'

USA one up against Egypt in the other game, which suits Italy.

  • 22'

There are droning horns being blown all the way through the game. It is not a small bit annoying.

  • 22'

Zambrotta lets De Rossi's pass under his foot and into touch.

  • 20'

Looks like he may have been on though.

  • 20'

Toni plays in Iaquinta, but he's offside.

  • 20'

Cornder is decent but Italy can't win the header in the box.

  • 19'

Good play from Italy down the right and Camoranesi - who possesses one of the few cool pony tails I've ever seen - wins a corner. He looks a lot like Furio from The Sopranos.

  • 19'

Kaka's touch is loose and Lucio is forced to nip in front of Ianquinta to clear.

  • 15'

Kaka finds space in centre field, looks up and seeing Fabiano in front of him, threads a pass through Italy's centre backs, but Buffon is out smartly to smother.

  • 14'

Robinho cuts in from the left, running deep into the Italy half, but he shoots weakly when it would have been better to pass.

  • 13'

Lovely litttle flick-chip from Kaka, which Luis Fabiano brings down very well on the turn, but he can't get it out of his feet and get a proper shot away.

  • 13'

Melo, who set that previous attack going, has looked handy so far. Corner comes to nowt.

  • 13'

Melo, who set that previous attack going, has looked handy so far. Corner comes to nowt.

  • 12'

    Ramirez's cross is knocked behind.

  • 11'

Zambrotta misjudges the path of the ball and Cannavaro's last-ditch block denies Kaka.

  • 10'

Good ball spread wide by Melo, and Maicon's hopeful shot is blocked. Mourinho wouild cut his ear off for that.

  • 9'

Santos almost takes hatchet man Robinho's pass in his stride, but it's a little behind him.

  • 8'

Zambrotta falls down under pressure from Robinho and wins a free kick.

  • 8'

Zambrotta intercepts Kaka's pass and sets up an attack.

  • 6'

Ramirez hits the woodwork. Error by Cannavaro, Luis Fabiano plays him in bursting down the inside-right chanel, and his shot clipped the top of the bar. Good effort, but also a good chance missed.

  • 5'

Good ball from Pirlo, but Camoranesi glances his header behind.

  • 5'

Corner comes to nothing, But Italy win another.

  • 4'

Super low cross from Camoranesi on the right, and Lucio slides in to turn the ball behind.

  • 2'

Great run from Maicon, who's found by an excellent lofted return pass from Luis Fabiano, but he's offside.

  • 1'

The sleeves on Dossena's shirts are too short and too tight.

  • 1'

Brazil are the only nation to have competed in each of the 6 Confederations Cups. They're proud of that one, I'll bet.

  •

When the Brazilian players have finished hugging each other, they'll kick off.

  •

The Italian national anthem is a great tune. Not quite as good as the old red army USSR classic, but excellent nonetheless, especially when accompanied by the completely out of tune singing of the players.

  •

The commentator on UK television has just invoked the meeting between the two sides in the 1982 World Cup. Apparently, it was "one of those 'remember where you were' moments". If humans could only remember their previous whereabouts at times of momentous world events, that would be an acceptable phrase, but they can't and it isn't.

  •

Italy will also be relying heavily on the thuggishly inclined De Rossi, probably their best player these days.

  •

So for Brazil, Dani Alves' snideness will feature only from the bench, and there's still no place for Pato. For Italy, there's no Rossi. Not sure exactly what Lippi is expecting from Toni and Iaquinta, but perhaps they'll be able to impose their physicality on Brazil, because it certainly won't be their skill.
