United States

  • Jozy Altidore 25'
  • Clint Dempsey 73'
  • 93'

Well who predicted that one then? Still in the competition only by virtue of a 6-goal swing in the final group game, the US have thoroughly deserved their win tonight. They broke sharply, worked hard and were superb at the back. Coupled with a below-par show from Spain, that was more than enough to give them the win.

  • 93'

    FULL TIME: SPAIN 0-2 USA

  • 92'

Mata's cross is sent behind yet again by Onyewu. They've allowed numerous corners, and rightly so, because Spain haven't really come close from any of them, and that's the truth, Ruth.

  • 91'

Mata tries a one-two with Villa, but can't quite reach the return.

  • 90'

The moustache doesn't help, but Del Bosque looks very hangdog

  • 89'

Pique is booked for dissent after Villa fouled Donovan off the ball by stepping in front of him.

  • 88'

Dempsey - who has been absolutely excellent tonight - goes off, to be replaced by Bornstein.

  • 88'

I don't think I've eaten my words yet so I'll do so now - the US boys have made me look very silly.

  • 87'

Good cross by Mata and Onyewu smothers Puyol's attempted shot not once but twice.

  • 86'

Red card. Bradley is sent off - harshly - for a studs-up tackle. No malicious intent there.

  • 86'

Terrible offside decision from the same lino. Casey would have been clear there.

  • 85'

Spain's sole tactic seems to be to send the ball wide. By the time the cross comes in, the US have had time to set themselves, and they've cleared and blocked brilliantly.

  • 84'

Good ball in by Mata towards Pique, but Onyewu, once again, clears very well.

  • 84'

    Casey replaces Altidore.

  • 83'

Good cross from Ramos, but the flag is up against Cazorla.

  • 83'

Poor offsidedecision from the linesman, otherwise it could well have been 3.

  • 82'

Xavi finds Mata in space wide on the left, but with plenty of time to pick his pass, he crosses aimlessly.

  • 81'

Mata finds Alonso who hits it first time from 25 yards, but it's straight at Howard and he punches clear.

  • 80'

Bradley really has worked his knackers off.

  • 79'

Onyewu intercepts Xavi's pass before it can find its way through to Torres.

  • 78'

Villa's low free kick is easy for T-Ho.

  • 78'

Spain have spent way too much time sending the ball wide and seeing their crosses cleared.

  • 78'

Spain win a free kick 25 yards out to the left of the D.

  • 78'

Mata, involved straight away, sends a low cross in, which Onyewu sticks behind.

  • 78'

Mata is coming on for Riera.

  • 77'

Spain are really missing Iniesta, as someone who can find angles and run with the ball.

  • 75'

America almost get away again, Dempsey running wide on the right. He flights a long ball in the direction of Altidore, but it's overhit.

  • 74'

Great play by Dempsey, hanging onto the ball until Donovan is ready to receive, Donovan's cross is decent, but Ramos, instead of belting it away, takes a touch. His touch is rubbish, and Dempsey is on hand to slide the ball in, with Casillas nowhere near, having dived to cut out the cross. Well well well.

  • 74'

    GOAL! USA 2-0 SPAIN

  • 72'

Xavi out wide to Riera, and his low cross it decent and towards Torres, but DeMerit does very well to divert the ball behind of the striker's toe.

  • 72'

Xavi's ball to Cazorla is fizzed at him too hard, and it's into touch.

  • 71'

Dempsey holds the ball up well down the left and the US enjoy some possession, but Donovan then passes into touch.

  • 70'

Riera's aerial ball to Torres is good, but Torres's touch lets him down.

  • 68'

Feilhaber replaces Davies for the US. Dempsey moves into a central role.

  • 68'

Fabregas is replaced by Cazorla. Until the point I hadn't realised that he was sporting a yellow streak down the middle of his head like a skunk. What a moron, and I apologise for depriving you of that information until now.

  • 67'

Fabregas jinks his way to the byline on the right and stands the ball up, but there's no one in a position to attack it.

  • 67'

USA look as though they're beginning to believe they might be able to hang on.

  • 65'

Another brilliant block. The ball again finds its way to Ramos, and his low shot is headed for the bottom corner, but Onyewu slides in brilliantly to divert the goalbound shot.

  • 65'

Torres can't find space on the edge of the box and is crowded out.

  • 64'

Fabregas plays in Ramos on the right side of the box and his powerful shot is punched behind by Howard at the near post. The corner comes to nothing.

  • 64'

Riera finds space in the box, and is denied only by a great block from DeMerit.

  • 63'

Pique wins the ball well and charges out from the back, but his attempted pass is too weak.

  • 62'

Spain are having a lot of possession now, without really passing the ball very peceptively. America are marshalling them very well, and restricting them, in the main, to shots from distance.

  • 61'

Puyol just does enough to rob Altidore.

  • 60'

Villa received the ball 30 yards out, runs with it, sets himself, and drags a shot only just wide.

  • 60'

    Corner is useless.

  • 59'

Xavi sends it wide to Ramos, in loads of space, and his cross is deflected behind.

  • 59'

Donovan breaks, but America waste possession. It's not inconceivable they could score a second on the break.

  • 58'

Fabregas plays it low in towards Villa and DeMerit polices him well.

  • 57'

Pique heads Donovan's corner from the right away.

  • 57'

Altidore wins a corner off Alonso.

  • 56'

Riera finds Villa, but his cross takes a little flick of Spector, robbing it of any power, and rolls through to Howard.

  • 55'

Riera cuts inside and shoots wide.

  • 54'

Penalty appeal from Spain turned down. Donovan clattered into Xavi, who was chasing Fabregas's clever chip over the US defence. America were lucky there.

  • 53'

Davies overhits his cross when in decent space on the right.

  • 52'

Ball breaks to Villa, great first touch, but he mishits his shot into the ground.

  • 52'

Riera wins a cross off Spector.

  • 51'

Villa's cross is cleared by Onyewu.

  • 51'

Pique brings the ball clear and finds Xavi, whose one-two with Torres almost comes off. Spain are dominating now.

  • 50'

Cross from Ramos is too deep for Villa.

  • 50'

Torres is drifting wide looking for space.

  • 49'

Onyewu brings the ball clear well, but is robbed. Spain spring forward and DeMerit does well to prevent Villa from running clear. Good defending.

  • 48'

Good save Howard from Villa's shot, diving low to his left. The corner from the right is sent to Alonso on the near edge of the box and he sweeps a right foot shot just over.

  • 47'

Howard comes a long way to tip Torres's cross from the right clear.

  • 47'

Donovan beats Capdevilla to an aerial ball sent left to right, and Pique has to clear his cross behind. The corner is wasted.

  • 46'

Bocanegra wins a throw off Fabregas.

  • 46'

    USA kick off.

  • 45'

And USA deserve it, too. Howard has had only one save to make - and that was in the last minute of the half - and America have had a few decent chances. Spain need to work a bit harder and inject some pace into their passing and movement.

  • 45'

    HALF TIME: SPAIN 0-1 USA

  • 45'

Great save Howard. Torres, now on the right, bundles past Bocanegra, then steps inside him and shoots low, but Howard gets down well at his near post, diverting the ball away with his foot.

  • 44'

Torres, having pulled onto the left, crosses towards Villa with the outside of his right foot, and itr's well cut out.

  • 42'

Altidore gives it away, but Villa's low pull-back is well cleared.

  • 42'

The free kick is pulled back looking for Villa, but the ball's cleared. A waste.

  • 41'

Spain win a free kick wide on the right, and Villa clips Donovan on his way to get the ball. Donovan makes a brief play at being hurt, before the situation resolved itself.

  • 40'

By getting around Alonso and Xavi, America are making it very hard for Spain to find their usual tempo.

  • 39'

Spector bisects the Spanish defence with a ball through to Donovan, but he's offside.

  • 38'

Fabregas squares it to Torres in the area, but the ball is slightly behind him, so the best he can do is win a corner. The corner comes to nothing.

  • 38'

Xavi wastes a good chance to send Riera in by passing centrally instead of left, and the ball is lost.

  • 36'

Should have been 2-0. Great ball in from Donovan, no Spanish player anywhere near it, and Dempsey took it away from the better-placed Bocanegra on the back post, heading wide.

  • 35'

Capdevilla pulls back Altidore, who had a run on him, and is correctly booked.

  • 34'

Capdevilla's cross is headed out for a throw on the left.

  • 33'

Great play from Xavi, spinning Bradley, and his pass almost sends Torres clear, but the interception by DeMerit is excellent.

  • 32'

Riera's speculative effort hits Torres and bounces to Villa in the area. His first touch is good but the ball gets a little stuck in his feet and he shoots wide.

  • 32'

Poor corner from Xavi but the ball finds it way back to him, and he's crowded out despite Villa's assistance.

  • 31'

    Headed behind for another.

  • 31'

Great touch from Villa pulling a cross out of the air, and Spector does very well to reccover. Spain win a corner.

  • 29'

Spector gets foward on the right before whacking a cross behind.

  • 27'

Well isn't that a turn up for the books. Well not really, as USA have made the clearer chances so far. Anyway, Dempsey fed it in to Ailtdore, who showed great strength to turn and fend off Xavi, before doing Casillas with his eyes, sending the ball to his right and in off the post, while the keeper went left, although he did manage a touch.

  • 27'

    GOAL! SPAIN 0-1 USA

  • 26'

Dempsey and Donovan has swapped wings.

  • 25'

Puyol clatters into the back of Donovan, as is his wont, and he's lucky not to be booked.

  • 25'

It's worked back to Villa on the edge of the box, and he's croded out.

  • 25'

Onyewu clears the corner, but Fabregas retrieves the ball and wins another.

  • 24'

Riera's cross from deep is wellied behind by Onyewu.

  • 23'

Fabregas receives the ball from Xavi, but thinking he's agot some time, he's robbed by Bradley's sliding tackle.

  • 22'

Riera wastes a good opportunity with a wild cross-cum-shot following Villa's clever ball lifted over the top of the USA defence.

  • 21'

USA are doing a job job of stopping Sapin from finding a rhythm. Donovan shoots well past the post from 30 yards after cutting in from the left.

  • 20'

Villa does Bradley for pace down the left, but he can only drag his cross to a defender.

  • 20'

    Alonso's pass is well intercepted.

  • 19'

Villa's pass to Torres is short, and so when Torres attempts to find Riera, the ball is behind him.

  • 18'

Fabregas finds Torres, but he's offside. Seeing a replay, that looks the wrong decision, although he missed anyway.

  • 16'

There's more horn in this ground than in a teenage's bedroom. The resultant noise really is unfeasibly annoying. It almost makes the Mexican Wave that's going round the ground almost acceptable.

  • 15'

Bradley's through ball is too long and Casillas fields.

  • 15'

Spain's new kit is a lot less cool than the one with which they won the European Championships. They have replaced the yellow piping and fine detail with a black stripe across the shoulder that makes the wearer look as though he's been run over.

  • 13'

Xavi is only just unable to take Ramos's deflected cross in his stride.

  • 11'

Bad miss from Torres. Fabregas curls in a low cross with his right foot from the left hand side, and the Britney Spears-alike whacks it wide of the far post.

  • 9'

Already I am pining for Iniesta.

  • 9'

Alonso to Xavi and wide to Villa on the right. He lays it back to Fabregas - sporting a new short back and sides - and he shoots over.

  • 9'

Dempsey's low shot from distance is only just wide.

  • 8'

Another half chance for the US. Great ball to the near post from Bocanegra and Davies, running across the aea, attempts to glance it inside the far post, but it's wide.

  • 8'

Ramos slides in on Donovan and the ball goes out for a throw. Good start from America.

  • 7'

Unlucky. Good cross from Dempsey on the left and Davies's overhead kick is only just wide, with Casillas nowhere near.

  • 6'

Ramos's cross is aimed at no one in particular and Onyewu heads it away despite the fact that the ball is on the ground.

  • 4'

Spain caught flat at the back and Casillas has to be quick off his line to clear. Donovan booked for a late tackle on Alonso.

  • 4'

    Corner headed away.

  • 4'

    Corner headed away.

  • 3'

Altidore wins a corner off Puyol.

  • 3'

Corner comes to nothing as Howard is fouled.

  • 3'

Fabregas's cross clips of Bocanegra and Howard twitchily it over the bar.

  • 2'

Slick passing from Spain - I think I'll be saying that a lot - until Fabregas gives it away.

  • 1'

Riera gets to the line, but his low cross is cleared.

  • 1'

Good early interception from Pique. He reads the game well.

  • 1'

    Spain kick off.

  •

The US team are huddled together. That'll make all the difference lads.

  •

Casillas's forearms make me feel very inadequate.

  •

The clearly quite parky weather is making me feel slightly better about the fact that so many of the very most useless BBC commentators and co-commentators are on a three week jolly in South Africa.

  •

As for the US, they'll be hoping to keep men behind the ball and the game tight.

  •

It really does seem unlikely that the US will be able to resist. Rather like France after they won the World Cup in 1998, Spain have gone on something of a tear, and look close to unstopabble, although they remain a little dodgy at the back - Pique is slow and Puyol a liability.

  •

Howard; Spector, DeMerit, Onyewu, Bocanegra; Dempsey, Bradley, Clark, Donovan; Davies, Altidore.

  •

Spain: Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Pique, Puyol, Capdevila; Fabregas, Alonso, Xavi, Riera; Villa, Torres. How on earth does the greasy, useless Riera get in this team?

  •

Hello and welcome to Spain's thrashing of the US. Teams to follow in a moment.
