Empoli goalkeeper Maurizio Pugliesi becomes oldest Serie A debutant

Maurizio Pugliesi said he "could not ask for anything more" after becoming the oldest player to make his debut in Serie A on Sunday.

The Empoli goalkeeper had been nothing more than a backup player in his two years at the Tuscan club. But coach Marco Giampaolo decided to give him his debut on Sunday at the age of 39 and five months as Empoli beat Torino 2-1.

"It went well and we won -- I could not ask for anything more," he said in the mixed zone, calcionews24.com reported. "We've finished 10th and I'm happy. I spoke to the coach and told him how emotional it was for me.

"The fans were great -- I never expected the reception I was given. They saw the human side and this satisfies me a lot. I want to dedicate my debut to [goalkeeper coach] Mauro Marchisio, who wanted to bring me here.

"My saves were all down to the hard work put in, because we goalkeepers are a team within the team here and we've always done well because we've trained well."

The former Pontedera, Montevarchi, Pescara, Poggibonsi, Grosseto, Pescara, Rimini and Pisa goalkeeper now has a taste for more first-team action.

"I want to keep on playing and now I've got to talk to the club," he said. "I feel at home at Empoli."
