Empoli boss Marco Giamaolo to stand down at end of season

Empoli boss Marco Giampaolo has confirmed he is leaving the Serie A club at the end of the season.

The Azzurri wrap up their campaign at home to Torino on Sunday and are currently sitting 12th in the table, eight points clear of relegation danger.

Giampaolo only joined in the summer but the 48-year-old admits he leaves with a heavy heart.

He said in Saturday's prematch press conference: "It's true, tomorrow is my last time on the Empoli bench.

"It has been a year of great professional satisfaction, we played great football and the club showed how virtuous it is.

"This allowed me to build a rapport of respect and affection with the fans, so it was a full season in every respect.

"Why am I leaving? Let's say it was a tacit agreement. We never discussed the contract, we reached the end of the season and this is the situation."
