Elche's financial issues prompt suspension of club duties

Elche have suspended all non-playing official club duties.

The players and coaching staff of struggling Primera Division outfit Elche will not carry out any non-playing official club duties until the financial problems at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero are rectified.

The Elche squad and first-team coaching personnel announced on Wednesday they would not take part in any public club activity or press conference due to the club's reported failure to pay their wages for the past two months.

A deadline for the club to reach a reported five million euros in payments demanded by the league (LFP) and the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) -- the players' union -- passed on Tuesday.

And the first-team squad, along with their coaching staff, released a statement on the official Elche website on Wednesday, which read: "The players and members of the technical staff of the first-team squad of Elche CF wish to publicly state that as of today [Wednesday] and until the institutional situation of the club is resolved, players and staff will not participate in any public event, press conference or any other act that comprises institutional representation of Elche CF."

If the Spanish club fail to keep up their debt repayments, it is reported they could risk facing a transfer embargo over the summer.

Elche sit 15th in La Liga, just two points above the relegation zone ahead of Monday's trip to Espanyol as they look to end a two-match losing streak.
