Frankfurt hit with new DFB sanctions following fan trouble at Magdeburg

Eintracht Frankfurt have been hit with two partial stadium closures following incidents at their DFB Pokal match in Magdeburg in August.

During their first German Cup match of the season, Frankfurt supporters lit smoke pots and used the smokescreen to fire a tracer into the neighbouring Magdeburg block.

The German FA (DFB) immediately opened preliminary proceedings against the club, which had already been hit twice in 2016 with partial stadium closures for fan trouble, while club executive Axel Hellmann said the events in Magdeburg represented a "new all-time low" for the club.

On Monday, the DFB announced new sanctions against Frankfurt including two partial stadium closures and personalised tickets for their travelling fans during the second half of the season.

The DFB ruled that the home end of Frankfurt's stadium will be closed for their upcoming second round DFB Pokal match against FC Ingolstadt, with the club also ordered to make compensation payments to their opponents for lost ticket sales. In the German cup the gate income is equally split between the two clubs.

Frankfurt have also been ordered to close the standing terrace when they face Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Oct. 15 after the DFB revoked a suspended sentence imposed on the club in July.

The club also need to implement a new ticketing system for their away matches during the second half of the season with the DFB ordering them to personalise all tickets sold to travelling Frankfurt fans.

"We were aware that we'd face a severe punishment," Hellmann said on Frankfurt's official website. "We accept the sentence and the requirements which go along with it."
