Niko Kovac appointed coach of Bundesliga strugglers Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt have tasked former Croatia boss Niko Kovac with the job of securing another year of top-flight football for Die Adler.

Kovac will be joined by his brother Robert after both signed a contract at Frankfurt until 2017 on Tuesday, succeeding Armin Veh, who was sacked at the weekend.

His contract agreement will only remain in place if the club stay in the Bundesliga.

On Sunday, Frankfurt sacked Veh after a worrying dip in form which saw Eintracht drop to the relegation playoff place in Bundesliga.

With only nine matches left to be played, the club have tasked the Kovac brothers with the job of staying up and turning Die Adler's season around after only picking up three points from their last six winless matches.

Eintracht currently trail 15th-placed local rivals Darmstadt by two points, although they have a three-point lead on Hoffenheim on the first direct relegation spot.

"It has to be Niko Kovac's goal to activate all forces in the squad to secure first league football," the club's CEO Heribert Bruchhagen said on the club's official website. "We are convinced he will achieve that goal."

Berlin-born Kovac made 241 appearances in the German top flight for Hertha Berlin, Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen, and Bayern Munich.

The 44-year-old has less experience as a coach. He worked in FC Salzburg's youth academy, before joining his native Croatia, first as the under-21 coach before taking over the senior team shortly before the playoffs for the 2014 World Cup against Iceland.

Following an unsuccessful World Cup in Brazil and a shaky qualifying campaign for the 2016 European Championships in France, Kovac was sacked in September 2015, with Croatia at that point third in their qualifying group.
