Essam El Hadary finally calls it quits

Veteran Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary has announced his international retirement - at the age of 45.

El Hadary, who won 159 caps and four Africa Cup of Nations titles with the Pharaohs, became the oldest player to feature at the World Cup finals when he played at Russia 2018.

He started as Egypt's second choice, but after they were eliminated after two games, he got his chance against Saudi Arabia, pulling off a stunning penalty save in a 2-1 defeat.

El Hadary, who still plays for top Egyptian club Ismaily, took to his Facebook page to confirm he was hanging up his international gloves.

"I am very proud to have played with the national team in 159 internationals, participating in unprecedented achievements.

"I hope that I have succeeded in my mission over the past years. I extend my thanks and gratitude to my family, who have borne the difficulties of my life and supported me in all my steps."
