Chelsea and Oxford break longest penalty shootout record in England

Chelsea celebrate after finally winning in the 16th round of penalties.

The record for the longest penalty shootout in England was broken on Tuesday as Chelsea's under-23 side defeated Oxford United after 34 total spot-kicks in the EFL Trophy.

Chelsea triumphed 13-12 after Oxford's Wes Thomas missed in the 17th round -- his second failed attempt of the shootout -- following a 1-1 game at Stamford Bridge.

Ola Aina and Josh Grant saw their penalties saved, while Marco van Ginkel and goalkeeper Bradley Collins missed the target. Collins made four saves to help Chelsea win.

The previous record had just been matched in August when Derby County and Carlisle United needed 32 kicks in the EFL Cup, equal with a Scunthorpe-Worcester FA Cup match in 2014. Those games finished with a higher score, 14-13.

The EFL Trophy -- a revamped version of the previous Johnstone's Paint Trophy -- features League One and Two sides with 16 academy teams invited from clubs in the Premier League and Championship.

Despite their penalty triumph, Chelsea finished bottom of the group, while Oxford went through with Swindon Town.

Among the other Premier League teams in the competition, Leicester and Swansea advanced, but Everton, West Brom, Stoke, Middlesbrough, and West Ham all failed to progress.

The highest scoring shootout in England was Brockenhurst's 15-14 win against Andover in the 2013 Hampshire Senior Cup, in 30 kicks.

Globally, the longest record was just set this June in a regional championship match between Czech fifth-division sides. SK Batov 1903 defeated FC Frystak 22-21 in 52 kicks.

That broke the previous record of 48 kicks from the 2005 Namibian Cup final as KK Palace outlasted Civics 17-16.

At least 16 of Tuesday's 24 games in the Checkatrade Trophy drew attendances of less than 1,000 and only Chelsea and Luton drew more than 1,500.
