Manuel Pellegrini in Man United gaffe

Manuel Pellegrini committed an embarrassing slip-up when describing himself as Manchester United manager immediately after winning his first trophy in charge of Manchester City.

Pellegrini: Capital One Cup just the start

The Chilean’s side won the Capital One Cup on Sunday by beating Sunderland 3-1 at Wembley to give the club their first silverware of the season.

But in a pitchside interview with BBC Sport, Pellegrini said: “[I am] very happy, very happy. I love pressure so I have to manage a big team like Manchester United.”

It is not the first gaffe the 60-year-old has made during his time at City.

Pellegrini’s side beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in the Allianz Arena in the Champions League in December, but the former Real Madrid boss did not realise that a 4-2 triumph would enable them to top their group. Thinking that City required a fifth goal, he decided to leave top scorer Sergio Aguero on the bench, instead bringing on midfielder Jack Rodwell in Germany.

While Pellegrini mistakenly declared he was in charge of United on Sunday, his sole Manchester derby finished with a resounding 4-1 win for City on Sept. 22.

The Chilean takes his team to Old Trafford for the return fixture when City visit their neighbours on March 25.
