Moyes: Young needs more goals

David Moyes has told Ashley Young he has to carry on scoring if he is to win back his place in the Manchester United team.

Ashley Young celebrates scoring against Stoke in the Capital One Cup.
David Moyes has told Ashley Young he needs to score more goals.

• Payne: Christmas cheer
• Jolly: Silver lining

The winger, making  just his third start since September’s Manchester derby defeat, ended a 19-month goal drought with his side’s first as United beat Stoke 2-0 to reach the last four of the Capital One Cup.

Young is competing with Danny Welbeck, Antonio Valencia, Adnan Januzaj, Nani, Shinji Kagawa and Wilfried Zaha for the positions on the flanks and Moyes told him he needs to continue making decisive contributions if he is to feature more often.

And Moyes said: “[Young] has showed he can come in and he can make an impact and score us some goals and I need that.

“We have got a lot of competition in wide areas at Manchester United, a lot of players we can select from, so you need to score and you need to play well if you want to get regular outings.

“He has got to keep stepping up like he did tonight. What I have noticed is when you come to Manchester United, and you are playing in the team, you have got to show it when you get your moments and opportunities and I thought he showed that tonight”

Manager Moyes admitted he was surprised that Young, a regular scorer in his time at Watford and Aston Villa, had gone so long without a goal.

“Ashley had two big chances against Shakhtar [Donetsk] and he has got the ability to score and he is a good goalscorer: we see that in training. He needed the goal for himself. We want a lot of goals around the team and it was great he could get one.”

Moyes criticised Young for diving after September’s win over Crystal Palace and was happier with his reaction to challenges from the Stoke defenders.

He added: “He got kicked a few times and he went down, got back up and got on with it.”
