Matt Miazga scores for Arnhem; first goal since moving to Europe

American defender Matt Miazga scored his first goal since leaving the New York Red Bulls for Europe, putting Vitesse Arnhem ahead early in the first half of a 4-0 win over fifth-tier Jodan Boys in the third round of the Dutch Cup.

Miazga scored in the 14th minute of Wednesday's match, taking a touch off a thigh to control a failed clearance, then taking a 16-yard left-footed shot.

The 21-year-old from Clifton, New Jersey, played for the Red Bulls from 2013-15, then joined Chelsea in January.

The 6-foot-4 centre-back made a pair of Premier League appearances last season and was sent to Arnhem on Aug. 31 in a loan for the rest of the season.

Miazga has made seven appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie and three in the cup.

With the win over amateur opposition, Arnhem advanced to the quarterfinals.
