Feyenoord fans clash with riot police after blowing title chance vs. Excelsior

Feyenoord fans clash with police in Rotterdam city centre.

Fans turned on police after Feyenoord squandered the chance to win their first Eredivisie title in 18 years in suffering a 3-0 defeat at Excelsior in the Rotterdam derby on Sunday.

Some 50,000 fans had gathered in Feyenoord's De Kuip stadium to watch the match on giant screens, and to celebrate the coronation of their team as champions, but instead left disappointed.

Thousands more were gathered in Rotterdam city centre and some supporters turned on police after the match, throwing beer bottles, fireworks and chairs before riot police forced them out of the area. Local media reported that 30 people were detained for involvement in the violence.

With second-placed Ajax beating Go Ahead Eagles 4-0, Feyenoord's lead at the top of the Eredivisie is now just a single point with one match to play.

Feyenoord started nervously but appeared to be on top early in the second half only to see Nigel Hasselbaink and Stanley Elbers both score in the space of three minutes to put Excelsior two up just before the hour mark. Ryan Koolwijk added a third shortly afterwards.

In next week's final round, Feyenoord are at home to Heracles Almelo while Ajax travel to Tilburg to take on Willem II.

"At the moment everything seems lost, but actually we still have everything to play for," Feyenoord captain Dirk Kuyt told TV station NOS.

Go Ahead Eagles' defeat at Ajax means the club from Deventer are relegated.
