Andres Guardado out 4-6 weeks with ankle injury, say PSV Eindhoven

Mexico international Andres Guardado will miss four to six weeks of action due to injured ligaments in his left ankle, his club PSV Eindhoven announced on Monday.

"PSV will play for the next 4 to 6 weeks without Andres Guardado. The Mexican has suffered damage to the ligaments in his left ankle," the club said via statement.

The 28-year-old injured his ankle during last week's 2-1 Champions League victory over Manchester United after being forced to come off in the second half following a foul from United defender Chris Smalling.

The four- to six-week absence would mean that the Mexico team captain will miss the CONCACAF Cup playoff against the United States.

Mexico and the United States meet on Oct. 10 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, in a single game playoff to determine CONCACAF's representative to the 2017 Confederations Cup.

"Initially we had hoped it would be an injury of two to three weeks, but it now looks like it could be six or seven weeks if it is worse than what we have seen up to this point," PSV Eindhoven sporting director Marcel Brands told ESPN Deportes in a telephone interview. "We still don't know and we hope that he can return quickly."

Also on Monday, Italian side Hellas Verona reported that Mexican defender Rafael Marquez will undergo medical tests on Tuesday to determine the severity of the muscle tear he suffered at the weekend.
