AZ give Aron Johannsson new deal

AZ Alkmaar rewarded American forward Aron Johannsson with a new contract on Friday.

Johannsson scored 17 goals in the Dutch Eredivisie and 26 in all competitions for AZ last season before being named to Jurgen Klinsmann's United States squad for the World Cup.

The 23-year-old had been under contract for three more seasons, but his new deal adds another year to his time at AZ, keeping him at the club until 2018.

"We are very pleased that we have kept a mainstay in our team for longer," AZ technical director and former U.S. international Earnie Stewart told the official club website. "Aron has quickly grown with AZ. We want to reward him with this new contract for his good performance.

"It's amazing that he immediately became our top scorer in his first full season. Hopefully, Aron continues this trajectory so that he will bring AZ many great things."
