Feyenoord beat Utrecht 2-1 to win KNVB-Beker final

Feyenoord Dutch Cup 160424
Feyenoord players celebrate after winning theĀ KNVB-Beker Cup.

Feyenoord won their first piece of silverware since 2008 after defeating FC Utrecht 2-1 in the KNVB-Beker final at De Kuip on Sunday.

Michiel Kramer put Feyenoord ahead and though Ramon Leeuwin equalised, Eljero Elia's shot led to a decisive own goal by unfortunate goalkeeper Filip Bednarek.

Feyenoord's first-half pressure eventually told three minutes before the break as Kramer jumped above the Utrecht defense to meet a Dirk Kuyt cross and guide a header beyond the dive of Bednarek and just inside the post.

Leeuwin levelled with a low shot six minutes into the second half after Feyenoord failed to clear a free-kick but Feyenoord, in their own stadium, won it in the 75th minute when Elia cut infield from the left and his shot that struck a post and rebounded into the net off Bednarek's back.

Feyenoord, which beat five top-flight opponents -- including archrival Ajax -- on the way to the final, won the Dutch domestic cup for the 12th time in front of ecstatic fans at the team's own stadium.

"Winning a cup with Feyenoord was my biggest dream," Kuyt told Dutch broadcaster SBS6. "This could be my greatest prize ever."

The veteran former Netherlands international won the cup with Utrecht in 2003 -- scoring one of the goals in a 4-1 victory over Feyenoord.

"This is for the fans," Elia said. "They haven't had a prize for eight years."
