Dinamo Zagreb bosses arrested over bribery charges

ZAGREB, Croatia -- Croatian police have arrested two Dinamo Zagreb bosses who are suspected of tax evasion and bribery.

Dinamo president Zdravko Mamic and his brother, coach Zoran Mamic, have been under investigation by the Croatian bureau for combating corruption and organised crime. They were detained on Saturday.

Croatian media says Zdravko Mamic is suspected of taking undeclared commission fees from the sale of several Dinamo players to foreign clubs. He has denied his and his brother's wrongdoing.

Mamic, who is known for his fiery public outbursts and nationalistic stands, has said the criminal investigation represents "genocide" against him, his family, Dinamo and the Croatian state.

The BBC reports that the alleged fraud has cost the club 118m kunas ($17.3 million, £11.1 million), and the state 12m kunas ($1.8 million, £1.1 million), since 2008.

A statement on the club's website read: "Dinamo's entire staff, the squad and all of the club's employees fully back them as we are convinced they will prove that they are innocent."
