Derby County appoint Steve McClaren as manager

Derby County have confirmed the appointment Steve McClaren as manager on a contract which will run until the end of the 2017-18 season.

McClaren returns to Derby for a fourth spell having previously represented the club as player, assistant manager and manager.

"I am excited to be back at Derby County as the club's manager," McClaren told the club's official website. "I have a great affiliation with the club, having been here on three previous occasions, and I am really delighted at the prospect of finishing what we started back in September 2013.

"I regret how my time at Derby ended back in 2015 and I am very motivated to put things right for the club and our supporters. My ultimate aspiration remains exactly what it was before, to take Derby County back to the Premier League."

Former England, Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg and Nottingham Forest boss McClaren has been out of work since leaving Newcastle United in March and replaces Nigel Pearson, who left Pride Park having only won once in the opening nine games of the season.

Since then assistant manager Chris Powell has guided the Rams to a win against Cardiff City and a draw at Reading to improve their standing in the league table.

The club confirmed that Powell, first-team coach Kevin Phillips and goalkeeping coach Pascal Zuberbuhler will retain their places within McClaren's backroom team.

McClaren guided Derby to a third-placed finish in 2014 but missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing the playoff final to QPR. He was fired following the club's eighth-place finish the following season which came after they led the Championship table at the end of February.
