Assuncao delighted to join Deportivo

New Deportivo la Coruna midfielder Paulo Assuncao says he "did not have to think twice" about signing for the Galicians, and he is sure they can get out of relegation trouble under his new boss and former team-mate Domingos Paciencia.

Assuncao has also played in Greek football on loan at AEK Athens

Assuncao, who has joined on a free transfer from Brazilian side Sao Paolo, completed a medical on Monday morning before signing a two-and-a-half year contract with Depor, with the option of a further year if things go well.

The chance to return to La Liga and play for such a "big team" had been impossible to turn down, Assuncao, 32, told a press conference at Riazor.

"Deportivo is a club which is seen very well in Brazil," Assuncao said. "They had national team players like Mauro Silva and Djalminha who played here. For me it is a pleasure to represent such a big team."

Assuncao said that recently-installed coach Domingos, who he knows from their time playing together at Porto over a decade ago, would instill the winning mentality and defensive qualities needed for Depor to climb from their currently lowly 19th place in the Primera Division table.

"He is a great coach, a great person, and he always wants to win," he said. "When he coached Braga they had a great season. At home they lost to nobody."

The tough tackler, who won two Europa League medals during his four seasons at Atletico Madrid, said he was looking forward to playing with other former Atleti players Pizzi, who scored the winner in Depor's 1-0 win over Malaga on Saturday, and right-back Silvio, who was the club's first winter window signing last week.

"Pizzi is a great player, very young, but in a short time he will be in the Portuguese national team," he said. "Silvio, too. He did not have many chances at Atletico, but he is a good player."
