Jorginho presented as new Vasco da Gama manager

Former Brazil international Jorginho was presented as the new coach of Vasco da Gama on Monday.

The 1994 World Cup winner takes over for Celso Roth, who was fired in the dressing room after the Rio de Janeiro club's 1-0 loss to Coritiba on Saturday.

Vasco currently occupy last place in the Brasileirao table, having earned just 13 points from 19 games thus far, and are facing the prospect of being relegated for the third time in the past eight years.

"First I want to say it's a great joy to take over at Vasco on my birthday, there couldn't be a better present than this," Jorginho, who starred for Vasco from 2000-01, told gathered media on Monday.

"I feel honoured, a club where I have great history. And I face the challenge with great faith, truly believing that we can get out of this situation. I see great possibilities for the squad we have.

"We didn't want to be in this situation, but we sincerely believe we'll get out of this situation."

Jorginho's first match in charge of his new club will be on Wednesday, when Vasco face Rio rivals Flamengo in a Copa do Brasil quarterfinal at Maracana.
