Santa Fe players celebrate
Independiente Santa Fe players celebrate after winning Wednesday's Copa Sudamericana final.

Argentina's recent stranglehold on South American club competitions came to an end on Wednesday night. After two goalless draws, Huracan were beaten on penalties in the final of the Copa Sudamericana by Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia.

There were wild celebrations in Bogota's El Campin stadium; this is Santa Fe's first continental title -- as it would have been, too, for Huracan had they prevailed. For contrasting reasons, then, both sets of supporters will remember this final.

Ramon Abila

Wednesday's first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final produced no goals in Buenos Aires -- leaving everything to play for next week in Bogota. Huracan of Argentina and Colombia's Independiente Santa Fe drew 0-0, a result that will please the first leg visitors more than the hosts.

The fact that neither can yet point to a continental trophy is not evidence of lack of tradition....

Sportivo Luqueno, Santa Fe look to break Argentina's cup dominance

Sportivo Luqueno's players celebrate their Copa Sudamericana quarterfinal win over Paranaense.

Argentina's national team may have been waiting a long time for a senior title, but at club level the country is currently monopolizing the continental titles.

The Copa Libertadores -- the one that matters most -- was won by River Plate this year and San Lorenzo in 2014. The Sudamericana, a Europa League equivalent, went to Lanus in 2013, River Plate last year, and there is the guarantee of an Argentine finalist this time round, with the defending champions meeting Huracan in the semifinals.
