Goals from Angel Di Maria and Ever Banega powered Argentina past Chile 2-1 in their Group D opener in Santa Clara, California on Monday.

Sans Lionel Messi, Argentina piled pressure on the defending champions and eventually took the lead in the 50th minute through the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

Argentina then went two goals up thanks to Banega nine minutes later, with the Sevilla midfielder scoring from a swift counter-attack.

Jose Fuenzalida scored a late consolation goal for Chile in second-half stoppage time.

Earlier in the day, Blas Perez hit the winner three minutes from time as Panama launched their first-ever Copa America campaign with a 2-1 Group D victory over Bolivia.

Perez gave Panama an 11th-minute lead before Juan Carlos Arce levelled things up nine minutes after the interval in Orlando.

But just as it looked as those it was going to end up all square, Perez rifled home his second of the evening to secure all three points.
