Martin Demichelis to retire from Argentina after Copa America

Martin Demichelis said he will retire from international football to concentrate on Manchester City after the Copa America.

Demichelis, 34, hopes to end his Argentina career by helping his country become the champions of their continent for a 15th time.

The defender, who has won 44 caps, debuted for Argentina in 2005 and, after being dropped in 2011, was recalled two-and-a-half years later and went on to play in last summer's World Cup final.

Having picked up a medal as a runner-up then, the former Bayern Munich, Malaga and Atletico Madrid player is aiming to bow out a winner.

"Whatever happens I will retire from the international team after the Copa America," he told Radio Rivadavia.

"It would be nice to end my career that began in 2005 by winning the title."

Demichelis, who joined City in 2013, signed a one-year contract extension in March to keep him at the Etihad Stadium for a third season.

He is one of three City players in manager Gerardo Martino's Copa America squad, along with striker Sergio Aguero and right-back Pablo Zabaleta.

All three are set to miss City's preseason fixtures and potentially the start of the 2015-16 season as manager Manuel Pellegrini intends to give them 30 days off after Argentina's campaign in Chile ends.
