Copa Libertadores an all-Argentina affair but Copa Sudamericana spotlights Brazil, Colombia

The dramatic Copa Libertadores semifinal between reigning champions Gremio of Brazil and Argentine giants River Plate went to a third leg.

After the first two, in conventional home and away format, River Plate had scraped into the final. Aggregate scores were level at 2-2. But River's late penalty gave them the extra away goal, and a place in the final against historic rivals Boca Juniors. Until, that is, Gremio lodged a complaint.

Chile to host revamped '19 Copa Libertadores final; Peru gets Sudamericana

ASUNCION, Paraguay -- Chile has been chosen to host the final of the 2019 Copa Libertadores, the first to be played as a one-off game at a neutral venue, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said on Tuesday.

The game, South America's equivalent of the Champions League, will take place at the National Stadium in Santiago, probably in November next year.

Chapecoense's recovery from a plane crash that killed 19 players in 2016 and Barcelona's comeback win against Paris Saint-Germain are among the nominees for this year's Laureus World Sports Awards.

Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo have also been nominated for prizes, with the winners revealed at an event in Monaco on Feb. 27.

Rio prosecutors to probe Copa Sudamericana fan violence

More than 50 Flamengo fans had been detained over the past few days.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Prosecutors in Rio de Janeiro launched an investigation Thursday into the fan violence surrounding the Copa Sudamericana final between local club Flamengo and Argentine team Independiente.

Clashes broke out on the night before Wednesday's match at Maracana Stadium, and continued until the early hours of Thursday. There was vandalism inside the stadium during the match and violence afterward, with more than 50 Flamengo supporters being detained over the two days.
