Andres Guardado and Rafa Marquez on Mexico 23-man squad

Mexico on Monday trimmed its squad for the CONCACAF Cup from 25 players to 23, omitting Miguel Herrera and Carlos Pena and including captain Andres Guardado and Rafa Marquez, both of whom had been doubts due to injuries.

Mexico faces the United States on Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, for a one-match playoff to determine the lone spot from CONCACAF at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Guardado, who scored six goals to lead Mexico to victory in this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup, injured his left ankle in PSV Eindhoven's 2-1 Champions League win over Manchester United on Sept. 15. He returned to full training with his club on Friday and saw action in Eindhoven's 2-1 win over Ajax over the weekend.

Marquez was substituted after straining a groin during Hellas Verona's 1-1 draw with Atalanta in Italy's Serie A on Sept. 20.

The squad was announced on Monday.

Brothers Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos were selected by interim head coach Ricardo Ferretti after being left off for last month's exhibition draws against Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina.

Complete squad:

Goalkeepers: Moises Munoz, Alfredo Talavera and Jonathan Orozco

Midfielders: Hector Herrera, Israel Jimenez, Andres Guardado, Jose Juan Vazquez, Javier Aquino, Carlos Esquivel and Jonathan dos Santos
