Club Atletico Independiente eliminate Toronto FC, Houston Dynamo advance past Guastatoya
Toronto FC made a quick exit from the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday with a 1-1 home draw against Club Atletico Independiente that sealed the Panamanian team's 5-1 aggregate victory.
Jordan Hamilton scored for Toronto in the 19th minute, but Omar Browne's 67th-minute goal sealed advancement for CAI.
"Disappointed for sure, but now we look forward," Toronto captain Michael Bradley said. "We're all focused on Philadelphia [in the MLS opener] at the weekend."
Next up for CAI will be a two-legged quarterfinal matchup against either Sporting Kansas City or Mexico's Toluca FC. SKC hold a 3-0 lead heading into the second leg on Thursday in Mexico.
A goal by Guastatoya's Aaron Navarro in the 72nd minute set up the possibility for extra time, but Manotas put Houston back on top in the 77th minute, and he wrapped up the result with another goal in the 85th minute.
Next up for the Dynamo is a quarterfinal series against Tigres. The Mexican club roared to a 5-1 home victory over Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa in San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico, to take the series 5-2.
Enner Valencia had a hat trick for Tigres, which also got an own goal and a tally from Eduardo Vargas. Mariano Torres found the net for Saprissa.
